From a garment factory worker to a Dressmaker

Miss. Chenda, 32, is now a dressmaker and the founder of Damode in Phnom Penh. Before she became a dressmaker and run her own shop she used to work as a garment factory worker one year in Phnom Penh. Actually, she is from an isolated rural village in Pursat province. She decided to leave the family because she failed two times of grade nine examinations in 2000 then she left her family to work in one of the garment factory in Phnom Penh. She worked almost 10 hours per day and 6 or 7 days including extra time on weekend. “After I failed the grade 9 two times, I felt nowhere to go because I did not know what I am going to do next, my family was in the poor condition and had 6 siblings under the family's support, and they were all students too, that’s why I decided to leave my family in order to earn money and that time I got about 40 USD$ per month. Sometimes, I had to work extra time to get more money, said Chenda”.

After working in the garment factory almost one year, she stopped working in that factory to go back her homeland. She said “Going back to my homeland because I thought working as the garment factory I could not learn anything just only work under the other’s control and could not boost myself to get more improved”. When she came back she also went to study how to sew the women dress in Pursat province about one year, and she worked as a sewer in Pursat market. In 2003, she decided to go Phnom Penh again to work as a sewer in the tailor shop near Toul Tompoung Market. Working in this shop, she got some money which could support her daily expense, but still not much. Furthermore, this tailor shop is mostly sewing for western and many foreigners came to that shop. So she could have a chance get improved the skill in making dress, but not Khmer traditional dress.

Chenda, still wanted to move out, and finally she stopped working in that tailor shop. She moved to live with her aunt and sew by herself for the customers, not under other’s control. “I moved to live with my aunt near Central market at the third storage in the hotel which was banished after the Khmer Rouge. I lived with her almost two years and I have my own sewing machine, I could sew for some customers who I have known some from the former shop I worked for. Not only from this shop, but I had been some hotel in Phnom Penh in order to ask for any dress needed that I could sew for them, yeah I got some approval.  I have known some other shop owners near the river-side who sale souvenirs and dresses; the shop owners gave me a chance to sew for them and I got some money, she said”.

In 2006, her business got a bit more improved; many customers start recognizing her more and more, especially western-people. She decided to leave her aunt to rent the house for her own business. Still she had only herself working for her own. Two years later, 2008, she moved to rent another house which bigger than this one near Independent monument. Now she has two staffs and two trainees in her shop. she said “I faced many challenges but I have never given up my effort, the more challenges I faces the more my efforts I try”.

She also wants other people not give up on what they are doing even they have not reached their goal and for those who did not get higher education, please don't be hopeless. “I think even we do not get good enough education like others, but it does not mean we cannot succeed in the next future, so keep going on what you are doing”.  In the future, she wants to provide the training on dress sewing for those who are interested in making cloth and dressmaker.

Living by your own

I remembered that when I was kid,10, I always thought my parents always support myself until I am old enough. yet, this view was just the dream because when I have grown up and become adult. My father died since I was 10-year. My view started changing from then; I do not know what happened in my intrinsic, or maybe it was my fate ? I am sure that when my father had gone, gone forever and I will never ever have chance to meet him again. Yeah, he had gone . So only mother and others six siblings living in the family under mother's support. How was everything goes on, my mother is a bit old and she had no education since Khmer Rough, during this region many people did not get enough education and most people were killed, and the family lives in the isolated village in the rural and what could my family does to support the condition of living ? my elder sister was just the factory worker, my second brother was just grade 8 or 9, third sister was just grade 7, my fourth brother was grade 5 , my youngest sister was grade 2 and I was grade 3. So only my elder sister who could earn little money to support the family and mother just had a small vegetable farm which could earn  at most 100 000 Riel=25$.  These are the reasons that I thought I have to move a way from home, far from home to pursue my study. I asked for my cousin family who live in Phnom Penh. Yeah to live with, surprisingly, they approved me to live with them. This, I  had been changed my view, changed my view because I am away from family to live a lone. And It's time to live by my own. The feeling when kid is away from the whole family, could you imagine what do you feel to that kid's feel?

Beggar

Walking along the street in the city, I have seen some of the beggars asking for money from people who travelling pass them, especially at the traffic stop. Some beggars even sleep at the edge of the road at night time, and they have no place to go! Yeah it is possibly no place. I wonder why there are so many beggars in Cambodia, it is just my observation. Actually, I myself have never given money to them while they asking for money from me and other people. It does not mean I am so selfish, but I just wonder what if I give money to them and what will they take that money use for? However, I used to give small money to some beggars either, if I feel that people would use that money in a right way.  Yet I still do not know whether they use it in a right way or not. Do you think there are many things that beggars can do instead of asking for money on the road?
Have they ever thought to be a dish cleaner at some restaurants in some places instead of begging? I do not know their mind. Have they thought they can to be a dish cleaner or other work is hard for them to do? I question myself what if I were them, or I have no chance to do other things besides begging? what if they are disabled people? what can they do ? I think it would be come from the mindset that people just want to do thing which is easy to do, not to try hard and then get it very easy just like begging. Is begging easy to do? Yes, no? I thought it is never easy to be a beggar. Yet, beggars might think it is easy to be beggar. That’s why they do it. Or No, it is because of the poverty make them to be beggars. Poverty is the main root which causes poor people to do that. Is it really because of poverty? It might be come from homeless that’s why they beg. Homeless, how can they survive! And why they are homeless? Because of education, maybe.  Why education? People can access to education also because of poverty. So how can we help homeless people to have shelter? Ask the government to help?  Ask the foreign investment to build home for them and give them opportunity to access schooling? So where is the money to get invest? Government gives land concession to investors? It would be have a proper solution to solve this problem out so what is your idea to solve this issue?

Cambodian Traffic Polices’ life

What do you think about Cambodian traffic polices’ life? Or would they happy to do this work?
Alright, if you are Cambodian people you may know more than foreigners or foreigners may know more than you, sometimes-- Moreover, traffic in Cambodia is very noisy, especially in Phnom Penh city or target tourism provinces.  Being a passenger passing on some roads traffic lights, some roads do not have traffic lights, you may see some polices are doing their hard job.
When pass the traffic light or somewhere else, have you ever noticed what are they doing? Or have you imagined the traffic polices'life look like? However, would they be valued, respected or satisfied by their citizens or passengers who are driving? I am not going to answer all these questions. If you see this article I want you express your point of view even you are Cambodian or not.

When people drive to somewhere even their workplaces, schools, or wherever, I believe they see polices are working hard to avoid traffic jam (mostly during the national festivals/holidays in the morning, around 7:00am to 8:00am and evening at 5:00pm to 9:00 pm). You will hear the whistle from the middle of the road, they seem like pedestrians-this is what polices are doing, it is risky yet they have to do it. They, polices, try to manage the traffic to avoid any bad traffic jam and to help it citizens to travel safety. But the thing is even they are trying to so, some passengers do not respect them, people try to go beyond without listening to polices.

Even some people do not respect them, yet they (polices) still keep doing their work while sweat is coming out and risky work.  You know why most of polices in Cambodia are doing this while other countries polices do not need to whistle much in the middle of the roads.  Because some people in Cambodia do not respect the traffic light or sign and that’s why polices try doing this when the roads are being noised. Still some people do not listen them at all, people just want to go, and they (passengers) do not care the other people who also travel on that road. They go fast and sometimes they cause accident happen, especially with some of the high rang people who pass on this, they (traffic polices) can be threatened by this high rang people due to the power can make them afraid. I notice some traffic polices   stand on a piece of pedestal to control traffic.  What the work is! How pity they are!

Look at another side to their condition of their living, they (polices) get little salary if compare to other works, and they work under the sun or in the rain. How can they live with less than two hundred US dollar per month? What if they have family with four members or more than this?  How can they pay for their breakfast, lunch and dinner and for their children? Some of them may work extra time, not only do they work as traffic police, but they also work as Moto tub driver or other works  to earn more money to support their family.

Okay, this is just my piece of view. What about you, people? What do you think about traffic polices?
